One our favorite comedy films Wet Hot American Summer (2001) has a never before seen behind the scenes film that was just released. Filmmaker Amy Rice did a wonderful full length documentary about the making of, and it’s for free on Vimeo. This is exactly what we all need right now! Thank you Amy Rice!
The film entitled Hurricane of Fun dives in with some amazing candid moments, like Paul Rudd playing basketball showing off his buns and how he just stumbled upon the script because he couldn’t get into Mission Impossible 2. Bradley Cooper just got out of school and into this movie, Janeane Garofalo while on the field hockey team joked about Sky Lab crashing down on her in 81′ and the lovely Molly Shannon is just scared and wants her Mommy! Real honest shit!
Even more insider movie knowledge enters our faces like Marguerite Moreau, who played Katie, was the last one to audition getting a tip from her friend urging her to do the movie. This was also Michael Ian Black’s first feature. “I’ve been living like a millionaire up here at camp. I have a bed” Michael Ian Black recalls about making the movie.
Additionally it’s so great to see everyone so young and bright-eyed in that mini-dv quality, yes! We have so many favorite scenes we can’t even count and seeing David Wain and Michael Showalter’s process is inspiring. So cool to see how they purposely went all in on every type of comedy in this film, pulling from real life camp experience, and hearing the talent’s perspective on the script.
We’ve been following them since MTV’s The State and their humor and attention to the craft is just incredible. This movie is one we can watch over and over and we always tell everyone to watch. Now go check out this awesome documentary Hurricane of Fun and travel back to camp!
